You certainly know your details. In 1997, on our first cruise to Alaska, we encountered an elderly couple from Berlin who had moved to Edmonton after World War II. The city was probably half German expats. Their description of post-war Berlin was harrowing. The USSR used artillery to level almost the entire city before moving it. Russia continues to use the same approach: massive artillery superiority coupled with long trains of tanks on roads.
