I think that the Reductio Ad Hitlerium argument is a consequence of secularism. In our post-20th century world, the religious ideals of Christianity have been translated into secular terms.
Sin can be anything from racism to capitalism, penance is adhering to the current political trend (Ukrainian flag, BLM sign, etc), the Apocalypse is climate change, and Adolf Hitler and the Nazis are Satan and his dark forces.
That’s my theory, at least. I understand that it’s certainly not verifiable, but it makes a certain kind of sense.
